A Researcher and a Man of the People

Chercheur1What motivated André Rochais was his love for human beings.  He would never have gone into his research if it had not been for his motivation to help people grow in their humanity and truly learn to live no matter their race, culture or religion.
No doubt the fact that he grew up in a working class environment is why he constantly strove to put the wealth of the Humanities into the words of the common folk.

He himself wrote:  “Deep at heart I am a man of the people.  I have always wanted to bring to the person in the street, to the ordinary person, all the riches that lie in the world of psychology.  They should not be denied access, in comprehensible language, to everything which can be used to allow them to be themselves…”
“I have always sought ways to promote the growth of people.
I was preoccupied with creating something new.  In that respect, I would call myself a researcher, in other words, someone in search of what can
provide the best results in education.”

Chercheur2This gift of being an educator was accompanied by a gift for understanding the human person and its growth.  He had a gift for unravelling the human reality, for seizing on its complexities and drives.  The educator in him served to spread this understanding of the human being and its growth.

He was preoccupied with spreading the many discoveries in the world of psychology to every human being and this gave a strong impetus to his research.

  • It drove him to the development of his explanatory system
  • It stimulated the creation of his educational tool and led to its constant refinement, thus making it more effective.
He knew from experience that the effectiveness of the PRH program was linked to the perfection of the tool.

What attracted André Rochais was to listen to people speak, listen to their research and watch them express their questions in order to better know and understand them.  This he expressed in the following text: “In my research work on growth and the pedagogy of growth, I sometimes compare myself to an archaeologist, excavating a site in search of the remains of an ancient city.  What I am discovering is an unbelievable richness of life.”
“I started with concrete persons, myself first of all, then those who shared their inner lives with me.  I tried to understand this experience of life, the "inner mechanisms" of human growth.  What I discovered, I have shared through workshops.  They were my "laboratory", along with the helping relationships I had with individuals."
